Ground Archery Postal Matches

 IMG 20180127 134311

The aims of these matches are twofold:

To provide a focus to ground archery training within BHAA clubs, through some relaxed competition

To bring together traditional archers; whether horseback archers, field archers or target archers. The postal match is open to any UK archer using an appropriate bow. Overseas competitors are also welcome to participate, please ensure that you use the correct form for returning scores (see below).

We have designed the matches to catch the essence of horseback archery as well as we can without the horses… All matches involve nocking and shooting under moderate time pressure (the equivalent of doing a 90m run in 15 seconds). The winter match involves front and back shooting, and the summer match involves a change in target distance between each shot.

Frequency: Matches will run for 2 months each – 3 during the winter season October-March, and 3 during the summer season April-September

Cost: no cost

Prize: for pride

Rules: The bow must be a non-centreshot bow, where the arrow is shot off the hand, with no sighting-aids

Please declare your intent to run the postal match before you start shooting and do please return your score, even if you didn’t do as well as you hoped. Please report your results accurately and honestly.

If a group are shooting together then a club official should return all results. If you’re shooting on your own then you may return your score yourself.

Age categories:

Children: 13y or younger (on 31st Dec of the current year)

Junior: 14-17y (on 31st Dec of the current year)

Adult: 18y or older (on 31st Dec of the current year)

If you have a disability and wish to mark this on your entry then please do so

We hope that lots of people will join in with and enjoy this postal match. Whether you are a horseback archer doing ground archery training, or a ground-based archer who shoots a one-piece non-centreshot bow, where the arrow is shot off the hand, with no sighting-aids.

This match is designed to be shot outdoors using FITA80 targets & 10 zone scoring.

The match can be shot at 2 distances – you may enter one or both as you wish

  1. SHORT HUN - Place 3 targets as in the diagram, at 5m, 15m, 25m
  2. LONG HUN - Place 3 targets as in the diagram, at 10m, 25m, 45m

There is also the option of doing a version of the Short Hun with 3doz arrows, rather than 6doz – to make it more accessible to children (U14 on 31Dec) and para-athletes who are unable to shoot so many arrows

Shoot 6 arrows at a time.
Time limit 30s. Start with your drawing hand empty and palm lying flat against your thigh; your arrows should be in a quiver of your choosing (about your person) or held in the bow hand. When 30s is up you must stop shooting even if you have arrows left to shoot.

Order of shooting the targets is far, middle, close, close #2, middle #2, far #2
If you miss you should still progress on to the next target in order
If you hit a target other than the one that you were aiming for then score M (miss) for that arrow

All shots to be taken as sideways shots. Place your feet in the stance you prefer.

Due to safety considerations in archery clubs and the necessity to always shoot directly down range please set up all targets perpendicular to the shooting line (ie directly facing the shooting line, not angled). Please would archers shooting on their own properties set-up the same way

Archers must shoot one at a time so they are able to move forwards and backwards along the shooting line to take a straight-sideways shot. Please ensure there are no trip hazards on the ground.

3 match options:
Short Hun (adults): Shoot 6 dozen arrows, ie. 12 ends of 6 arrows

Short Hun (children & para-athletes who cannot shoot 6doz arrows): 3 dozen arrows, ie. 6 ends of 6 arrows Long Hun (adults): 6 dozen arrows, ie. 12 ends of 6 arrows

Please score after each set of 6 arrows.

Please record the score of arrows, record M for any that miss or hit the incorrect target and T for any that were not shot because you ran out of time.

Also note the number of hits (H), and golds ie 10s (G)
